This Saturday, Chelsea will play Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Potter has had to wait for nearly a month to make his first league appearances in charge of Chelsea, but the international break came at an opportune moment to help him refresh his squad.
At yesterday's press conference, Potter confirmed that Cucurella and Chukwuemeka have some illness, and they won't be available for the Palace clash. Ngolo Kante and Eduard Mendy trained but didn't take part in full training. The duo are in doubt for today's match.
Despite some illness and fitness concerns, there are so many plays to choose from that Potter will have difficulty deciding on his starting eleven. In his first match against RB Salzburg, Potter opted for a 3-5-2 formation, and we expect him to repeat the same, though the 3-4-3 formation has some solid advantages considering the players available for selection, so there is a high probability that the Blues will line up with this style.
With mid-fitness in doubt, Kepa Arrizabalaga will continue to start between the sticks for the third time in a row. Thiago Silva will lead the back three, and with Cucurella out due to illness, Chalobah and Fofana are likely to be considered to play alongside the veteran defender to provide pace and stability.
Ben Chilwel will be hoping for full 90 minutes involvement on the left wing back position and Reece James will feature on the opposite flank. Jorghino and Matteo Kovacic are favorites to start in the middle to provide balance and control in the midfield.
Against RB Salzburg, Sterling started as a high-breed wing back and was a success for Potter, but today the English winger is likely to move to an advanced number 10 role to accommodate Ben Chilwel. Aubameyang should continue to start ahead of Broja, and Havertz should start as the right-sided number 10. The German forward was on fine form for his country during the international break and should continue to start of Mason Mount.
So the possible lineup will be composed of:
Kepa, Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwel, Reece James, Jorghino, Kovacic, Sterling, Aubameyang, and Kai Havertz.
