Arsenal: Why Arteta and Klopp are Hesitant About Signing Tielemans Despite Public Acclaim

Liverpool had reportedly signed up for the race to sign Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans. The Belgian was hoping to move last summer but unfortunately luck was not in his side as Leicester City eventually managed to keep him within their grasp. Jurgen Klopp has been dealing with a midfield crisis for the last two years and with Naby Keita set to leave next summer, Tielemans has been identified as the ideal replacement.

Mikel Arteta also had his fair share of interest in the Belgian midfielder. According to Fabrizio Romano Arsenal were the favorites to sign the 25 year old last summer but for some reason, the talks ran cold and no effort was ever made to get the negotiations back up and running. It is not clear whether Arsenal are planning on signing him in the summer when he will be a free agent, but the amount of red flags he has shown this season could dismantle Arsenal’s plans altogether.

Mikel Arteta got a lot of stick last summer for not signing Tielemans last summer but Xhaka’s remarkable run of form this season has managed to lull the critics. It is, however, without question, that once Xhaka makes a costly mistake, all fingers will be pointed to Arteta for entrusting his faith on a player who is fond of making critical undoings. But so far, Arteta’s brave call to not sign Tielemans has been justified.

My opinion

Personally, Mikel Arteta’s decision to not sign Tielemans was the right call. Tielemans has not been on his best element this season and his desirable attributes have already started waning. In a recent clash against West Ham, his track-back movements shocked many as he was very lax when his side was conceding a counter attack. That was spotted by many Arsenal fans who pointed out that Arteta would be more than furious if Tielemans ever did that at Arsenal.

In as much as the general public loves him, I think the signing of Tielemans to either Arsenal or Liverpool will be disastrous. For Klopp, I think Tielemans would struggle a lot to blend with his midfield play because as it turns out, Tielemans does not have a high stamina yet all Liverpool midfielders are box-to-box maniacs.
