The World Athletics Awards ceremony happened last night 1 December 2021 but was conducted virtually. This award ceremony was a celebration to honour individuals and organisations all around the world, who have performed exemplary in what has been a very challenging year in the world of sports due to cancellation and postponement of some sporting events.
Ten awards were presented but the most exciting ones were the Female and Male Athlete of the Year awards. The voting process was done on social media by sporting fans, World Athletics Council and the World Athletics Family.
Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge and Faith Kipyegon were nominated for these awards in the category of Male and Female Athlete of the Year respectively. They both managed to go through past the first voting process and we're finalists for the award.
For the Female Athlete of the Year award, Jamaican sprinter Elaine Thompson-Herah beat Sifan Hassan and Faith Kipyegon to become the winner. In the male category, surprisingly Karsten Warholm of Norway clinched the award beating Eliud Kipchoge and Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda to it.
