Sergio Aguero Reveals Why He Rejected Lionel Messi's No. 10 shirt At Barcelona

Sergio Aguero declined the opportunity to wear Barcelona's renowned No. 10 jersey out of respect for club great and close friend Lionel Messi.

After his contract with Manchester City expired, Aguero, 33, joined Barcelona on a free transfer this summer.

After decades of representing Argentina together, the striker landed in Catalonia hoping to play alongside Messi at club level for the first time.

However, due to Barcelona's financial difficulties, Messi was unable to sign a new deal and transferred to Paris Saint-Germain.

This freed up the No. 10 shirt for a new occupant, with Sergio Aguero and Philippe Coutinho among others who were reportedly given Messi's old number by the Blaugrana.

Aguero explained his decision to Twitch broadcaster Ibai Llanos: "At Barcelona, you're refusing to wear the number 10 shirt? It wasn't because I didn't want to, but because I owed it to Messi."

"Ansu Fati gets a new shirt number," the La Liga club said in a statement at the start of September, referring to Messi's old outfit.
