East Africa consists of 6 countries which are Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan.According to the latest FIFA rankings, Uganda leads in this region at position 79 followed by Kenya at position 104 and then Tanzania at position 135.This shows that in terms of national team, Uganda is the most successful in East African region their best performance being reaching the Africa Cup of Nations final in 1978 which no other East African country has ever achieved.
In terms of players, Kenya leads in the number of internationals as well as their success.In this article we will look at East Africans who have played in the most prestigious competition in the world of football; The UEFA Champions League.
1.MC Donald MarigaMariga was the first Kenyan and East African to play in the tournament.He did so with Inter Milan in the 2009/2010 season.Rather than playing for his first time,he went on to win the cup with his club which by then was under coach Jose Mourinho.He was a midfielder.
2.Dennis OliechOliech is Kenyas all time record goalscorer with 34 goals.He was the second Kenyan and East African to play in the tournament.He did it in the 2010/2011 season with then ligue one club Auxerre.He was a striker.
3.Victor WanyamaHe currently captains the Kenyan national team.He has played in the Champions League on 3 different seasons with two different clubs.The first was in 2012/2013 season with Celtic where he became the first East African to score in the tournament in a 2-1win over Barcelona.He went on to play two more times with Tottenham in the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 seasons.He is a midfielder.
4.Mbwana SamattaHe captains Tanzanian national team.He played on the showpiece while at Belgium outfit KRC Genk in the 2019/2020 season and even scored a goal against Liverpool which was disallowed by VAR.
