Although it is still too early to tell, Cody Gakpo is being regarded as the Qatar World Cup's breakout star. The PSV man has quickly transferred his league form (he has 9 goals and 12 assists in 14 league games) to the World Cup, scoring a goal in each of the Netherlands' two World Cup games.
Ten Hag, a Gakpo fan (he wanted him last summer), wouldn't need much convincing to try to sign him during the winter transfer window. If he needs motivation, Gakpo's claim about the need for a headline-grabbing move abroad is exactly what he needs to hear.
"I understand the mindset of those players [who dream of joining a major European club]. I also have my sporting goals myself and I will make a choice from there," he told Algemeen Dagblad (as per Metro).
"But it is certainly not the case that when I train here with players who play at big clubs abroad, I constantly think, "Oh dear, now I also have to go abroad quickly."
If Gakpo wants to move abroad quickly, Ten Hag must act quickly after the World Cup to sign him. Who knows, Gakpo might be able to make United fans forget about Ronaldo.
