It is one of the most dramatic title wins in football history. After amassing a total of 84 points from a possible 120, Besiktas are champions of Turkey. Intrestingly, Galatasaray also got the same number of points.
WHY BESIKTAS AND NOT GALA?
In Turkey Super Lig, the rules say that if teams finish the season equal on points, head to head record shall be the tie breaker. Now, this season, Besiktas beat Gala 2-0 in the first leg and then lost 3-1 in the second leg which leads to an aggerate of 3-3. In such a case, goal difference comes to question.
WHO HAD THE BETTER GOAL DIFFERENCE?
Besiktas scored a total of 89 goals and conceded 44 goals. Gala scored 80 goals and conceded 36 goals. Therefore Besiktas has +45 and Gala +44. That is why Besiktas and not Gala are champions. This is a throwback to the English title race back in 2012 when Manchester United lost the league title to Manchester City by virtue of goal difference.
The title triumph marks the return of Besiktas to the summit of Turkish football after four years without winning the league. They last won it back in 2017.
Impressively, the top scorer award goes to Gabob International Aaron Boupendza with 22goals followed by former Stoke City striker Mame Diouf with 19 goals same as Canadian International Cyle Larin. Both Aaron and Mame play for Hatayspor.
