AFC Leopards and Tusker FC on the Upper Hand of Playing CAF Club Competitions Following a New Directive

The club that will be at the top of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League by June 30 will be the country’s representatives in the 2021/2022 Africa Champions League, the federation has announced.A communique from the FKF sent to clubs on Monday evening, the Federation has stated that CAF’s directive to have names forwarded to them for representatives in Inter-Club competitions has necessitated the decision.The federation is in receipt of communication from CAF directing that FKF submits Kenya’s representatives for the CAF interclub competitions latest June 30, 2021,” stated the letter from FKF signed by CEO Barry Otieno.

“Consequently, and in consideration that the BetKing FKF Premier League calendar may not be concluded before the aforementioned date, due to the disruption occasioned by the COVID 19 pandemic, the FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee, in a meeting held on May 7, 2021, resolved that the FKF PL representative in the CAF Champions League shall be the team at the top of the table, as at June 30, 2021,” the letter added.But will have to mean that all the teams chasing the leadership position by the stated date will have to have played equal number of matches.

Tusker at 34 points from 16 games, AFC Leopards with 32 from 15 and Kariobangi Sharks with 31 points from 16 game are the front runners to win the ticket.Should the leadership chase remain with the three sides in the next six weeks, it will mean for the first time in four years, Kenya will have a different flag bearer from Gor Mahia in the continental championships with Gor Mahia lying 6th on the log with 22 points from 14 matches.
