Chelsea to Miss Out on Highly Rated Defender After Newcastle's Transfer Spree

Newcastle United are a step closer to signing highly-rated center-back Diego Carlos after Fabrizio Romano revealed that the Brazilian has reciprocated the interest shown in him by the Premier League club. According to Romano, a deal worth more than €35 Million could be completed and Newcastle United have no plans of backing out from the transfer race despite the hefty transfer fees. Newcastle United have already agreed on personal terms with the player in a potential five-year deal and all that is remaining to be done is the agreement between the two clubs on the transfer fees.

If Diego Carlos is signed, it will be Newcastle United’s third high-profile signing of the month following the signing of Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid and Chris Wood from Burnley FC. Eddie Howe is clearly busy in the transfer market as he aims to dig out the Magpies from the relegation zone this season.

Diego Carlos' transfer to Newcastle United will however have a devastating effect on Chelsea’s future transfer plans. This is because Sevilla will now keep a tighter leash of Joules Kounde was previously linked with a move to Stamford Bridge. And now that Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, and Cesar Azpilicueta are set to leave at the end of the season, Diego Carlos’ transfer could not come at any worse time.

Sevilla are known to be very particular and strict with the players they want to sell and selling Diego Carlos would mean keeping Joules Kounde because he will be the only highly-rated defender left at the club. Joules Kounde’s contract is set to expire in June 2023 but plans to renew the contract have already been drafted according to insiders.

Last summer, Chelsea were mightily close to signing the Frenchman but a breakdown in the transfer fee negotiations threw every progress in the transfer process out of the window. Chelsea had already agreed with the player on the terms of the potential partnership, eliciting an optimistic feeling in the hearts of many Chelsea fans but they were left bitter on deadline day when Sevilla refused to let the player go.
