There's no doubt that the arrival of Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon in the 2020 January transfer window has turned around the fortunes of Manchester United. The Portuguese midfielder was probably the best player for the second half of last season having adapted so quickly to the English Premier League.
Bruno's contributions, both individually and in terms of team play, revived the already fading top 4 hopes for United. His assists and goals made sure United qualified for the Champions League ahead of Leicester who faltered towards the end of the season.
The Portuguese carried his form to the 2020/21 season and has now registered 14 goals and 9 assists in 24 league games. He's the Red Devils' topscorer. However, there's one player who seems to have overtaken the Portuguese maestro this season, especially in the last couple of games. Man City's Ilkay Gündogan has been phenomenal in recent weeks, helping the Citizens to 11 consecutive wins in the Premier League.

The German has scored 11 goals in 18 league games,an average of 0.61 goals per match which is better than Bruno Fernandes' return of 0.58 goals per game. The Man City midfielder is scoring a league goal after every 126 minutes while the Manchester United man has been finding the back of net after every 145 minutes. Gündogan has played 6 (18) less matches than Bruno Fernandes (24). Here is a summarized comparison between the two players.
The German playmaker was fated January's player of the month for his troubles and is likely to be emerge the winner again in February. He will surely be the favourite to win player of the season should he continue with his electric form and Man City are crowned champions.
Don't get me wrong,Bruno Fernandes is undoubtedly one of the best if not the best midfielders in the world but Ilkay Gündogan is the best player in the Premier League at the moment.
