Opinion: Four Footballers Who Have Nigerian Names But Are Not Originally From Nigeria

Nigeria is one of the greatest countries in the African continent, which has produced several football players, over the past 20 years.

Some of these players have represented the Super Eagles of Nigeria but surprisingly, there are some of the football players who have Nigerian names but are not originally from Nigeria. Let's have a look at these players below;

Michael Essien

Essien is one of the best African midfielders in the modern history, having played for the top clubs including Chelsea, during his professional football career.

The 38 year old Ghanaian made 59 appearances for Ghana at international level.

Additionally, he also represented AC Milan, in the Italian first division. However, some Nigerians think that Essien is originally from Nigeria because of his surname but it should be known that Essien originates from Ghana.

• David Alaba

Alaba played for Bayern Munich senior team from 2010 to 2021 but currently plays for Real Madrid, in the Spanish first division. It is important to note that, his surname is from the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria but he was born in Vienna, Austria.Photo Curtsey of David Alaba

Angelo Ogbonna

Ogbonna is one of the most experienced central defenders in the English Premier League and currently plays for West Ham United. His surname is from the Igbo tribe in Nigeria. His parents moved from Nigeria to Italy in 1983, hence Ogbonna was born in Italy.

Jordan Ibe

Ibe used to be one of the brightest young players in the English Premier League, as he played for Liverpool from 2012 to 2016. His surname is from the Igbo tribe in Nigeria but he originates from England, where he was born. He even represented England at the youth level.
