Azimio leader Raila Odinga has lauded Senegal for qualifying for Round of 16 at the World Cup 2022.In a statement on Tuesday shortly after the African team proceeded to the next stage, Raila marvelled at the game.
The Lions of Teranga made Africa proud after becoming the first team from the continent to reach the knock out stage of the competition.
Coach Aliou Cisse's charges weathered a strong challenge from Ecuador to beat the South Americans 2-1 in their last Group 'A' match. The victory saw them proceed to the next round having garnered six points, one behind leaders Netherlands who beat Qatar 2-0 to also advance.
Until this year, many had overlooked Senegal in favour of other successful West African football giants like Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Ghana. Nigeria has won the tournament three times, Ivory Coast two times and Ghana four times. Following a successful fifa World Cup debut in 2002 in which the country reached the quarter-finals, Senegal officially established itself as a major football rival in Africa.
