Barcelona announces new captains

Barcelona has a new captain following the departure of Leo Messi.

On Thursday, Barcelona announced that their all-time club goalscorer Lionel Messi will no longer continue as a Barcelona player after he could not extend his contract with the club.

Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique, Sergio Roberto, and Jordi Alba are the heirs to Messi's armband.

Busquets, Pique, and Sergi Roberto were formerly vice-captains, and the left-back has been added to the list of official Blaugrana captains after leading Spain to Euro 2020 ahead of Busquets' return.

Busquets made his formal debut as first team captain during Sunday's Joan Gamper Trophy match against Juventus.

Prior to the game, the Catalan midfielder only had kind words for his predecessor, Lionel Messi.

Barcelona's four captains are all graduates of the club's renowned La Masia youth academy.

Alba joins Busquets, Pique and Sergi Roberto.
