Manchester United are in the midst of a major slump in form, and it couldn't have come at a worse time. The Red Devils are about to embark on a lengthy stretch of extremely difficult matches, including a Champions League match against Atalanta, and it couldn't have come at a worse time. This is a game that they must win in order to have any chance of qualifying.
So, what was the root cause of the sudden deterioration in form among the squad members? For starters, I believe the coach is the last person to be held responsible.
First and foremost, there is a distinct lack of enthusiasm among the players. This was noticed because of the frequency with which Manchester United players lose second balls and their lack of motivation to try anything new when they have the ball in their possession.
Because Wan Bissaka is the only player who makes reasonable tackles and wins duels, the rate at which duels are being lost is extremely concerning.
Second, the squad has been surviving solely on the strength of individual brilliance, and it appears that luck has finally run out. It is necessary for the club to begin playing as a unit if it is to make any significant changes, which means that the coach will have to make some tough decisions and reduce the playing time of many selfish players, including Ronaldo and Greenwood.
In the third instance, if the team chooses to field Paul Pogba against fast-paced opponents, the midfield will continue to concede goals because the French midfielder does not have a plan to chase down a player after he loses the ball. In my opinion, it is past time to call an end to Donny Van De Beek's sabbatical and make the decision to field a midfielder who understands the value of a game.
