R.I.P.: Kenyans Mourn The Passing Of A Legend (Photos)

Legendary rugby coach Benjamin Ayimba passed on at Kenyatta National Hospital around 8:00 pm on Friday after losing the battle to cerebral malaria.

Benjamin Ayimba, the Legend.

Ben Ayimba occupies a special place in the annals of Kenya's sports history as the first and only coach to lead Kenya to victory at the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Singapore in 2016. The historic win when Kenya hammered Fiji 3-7 will live on in the minds and hearts of rugby lovers.

Under coach Ayimba the National Rugby Sevens team takes on Japan in a past encounter.

While releasing information of his demise the family spokesperson Oscar Osir thanked Kenyans for their moral and financial support during the time Ben was hospitalized.

The Kenya National Rugby team frequently visited State House at the invitation of President Uhuru Kenyatta himself an avid lover and former rugby player. (Bottom) Ben Ayimba with President Uhuru.

Ayimba fell ill with cerebral malaria in January and was admitted at the Avenue Healthcare Hospital and later released when his condition improved. In mid-March, he had a relapse and was readmitted only this time the attack was severe and needed specialized treatment. On April 10th he was moved to Kenyatta National Hospital where he breathed his last at 8:00 pm on Friday 21 May 2021.

As a coach, his charges knew him as compassionate and willing to extend the coaching beyond the playing field.

During his battle with illness, Kenyans responded with prayers, well-wishes, and in kind. Among those who responded were Ben Ayimba's biggest fan and rugby lover President Uhuru Muigai with a donation of KES 1,000,000 to help offset medical bills.

ODM Party leader Raila Odinga in a yellow jacket visited Ayimba in hospital.

As a player, Ayimba had colorful stints with both Impala Saracens and earlier on with the Nondescripts R.F.C. Ayimba also captained the national 15s and 7s rugby teams in his playing days.

His coaching career was even more illustrious at one point earning him a Head of State Commendation.

Benjamin Ayimba is the son of retired civil servant Jack Ayimba of Nyadiang'a village in the Kaugagi area of Siaya County. He lives behind a powerful legacy of impeccable sportsmanship and patriotism.

The good times. Ayimba (center) with close friends.
