Can Abramovich's sanction have an impact on other premier league club owners

Chelsea Russian owner Roman Abramovich's assets were sanctioned by the UK government following the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. This is due to Abramovich's close relationship with Russian president Vladimir Putin who invaded the Ukraine through his army.

Abramovich's assets including Chelsea Football club were sanctioned by the government amid the ongoing war between the two countries.

With the assets still frozen, the club's operation was at risk as only the license from the government allowed the club's men and women teams to continue playing.

However, premier league has now come under pressure to start assessing other premier leagues teams prospective owners in relation to human rights.

"We’re looking to see if more tests need to be added, if we need to be more transparent and whether those decisions should be approved by an independent body,” Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said at the recent Financial Times Business of Sport Summit.
