Goals from Casemiro & Marcus Rashford handed Manchester United a historic 2-0 win over a stubborn Newcastle United side in the final of the EFL cup last night which saw the club lift their first piece of Silverware since 2017.
The Red Devils have had a good run this season which has seen them climb to 3rd position in the EPL table. Their good fortunes has been due to their solid defense line. The likes of Luke Shaw, Wan Bissaka, Raphael Varane & Lisandro Martinez have been brilliant at the back.
Manchester United really struggled defensively last season, with the club conceding a whopping 56 goals in the league alone. However the introduction of summer arrival Lisandro Martinez nicknamed "the Butcher" by fans, in their heart of defense, has really ensured their defense line has remained hard to break down.
The world cup winner alongside Raphael Varane have formed an impenatrable park in the United backline this season, with the duo putting in great performances in recent months. The Argentine has helped the club maintain 7 shut-outs in his last 12 outings across all competitions as well as he has bagged 1 goal in as many games.
Lisandro Martinez is known for his calm composure with the ball, exceptional ability to play from the back, excellent work rate & his fabolous defending skills. With Harry Maguire, 29, future at the club remaining uncertain, Martinez, 25, who has already proved he is a world class centre back, could be a long term fix to the Red Devils defensive problems.
