Barcelona’s summer transfer business has been baffling to say the least. Many are still wondering how the club has managed to attract top quality players this summer, yet they have a mountain of debt threatening to cripple the club financially. The club’s president Joan Laporta has been non-committal to disclosing Barcelona’s recent source of money, but the fact that he has managed to pull such a seamlessly impossible stunt shows that he is committed to providing the best for the club.
One of the players that Barcelona had shortlisted in their transfer list was Chelsea’s skipper Cesar Azpilicueta. During Chelsea’s economic sanction, many believed that Azpilicueta was preparing to call it quits to his prosperous career with the Blues as he was reportedly in close contact with Xavi, discussing a potential transfer. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, the rumors were allayed as false and Azpilicueta clarified his stance by penning a new contract with Chelsea.

In response to Azpilicueta’s decision, Barcelona have decided to withdraw their interest in the right back. “We tried to sign Azpilicueta this summer but it proved impossible. The offers we made were not good enough to convince him to join us. We will now consider other options,” confirmed Xavi to the media.

Boehly expected to cancel plans for signing a new Right Back…
Barca’s change of heart now means that Chelsea can call off their plan to sign an emergency right back. According to earlier reports, the Blues were heavily considering scouting for new right backs who could replace the Spaniard incase he left to his native country. No specific names were leaked to the media as shortlisted candidates, but a few players were pointed out as potentials standouts worth Tuchel’s attention.

Some fans think that Tuchel should continue with the initial plan to sign a new right back and instead halt the search for a new center back. Since Azpilicueta can play proficiently as a center back, there would be no need to sign a natural center back, but a back up for Reece James would be necessary. I agree with this assertion.
