Gus Poyet, a Chelsea legend, underlines why Mason Mount must be played in a specific position.
Mason Mount has thrived in a variety of positions under Tuchel due to his versatility. However, Poyet believe that playing him out of position limits his influence.
Poyet:
“Mason, in my opinion and with respect to the coaches, should have a specific role on the team and should play that position 90% of the time.
When you have a player who plays multiple positions, it is difficult for him to perform at his peak. Chelsea create a huge number of scoring chances when Mount plays as pivot behind the strikers or lose to the box. He's a different when played too wide or deep.”
Mount has been one of Chelsea's best performers, having been voted player of the season in each of the last two seasons. He has primarily operated as No. 10, but he has also played on the wing a couple of times. However this season he has had a sluggish start and Graham Potter will face a new challenge in getting the 23-year-old playmaker back on track.
Nonetheless, Potter is a top coach with tactical versatility. He understands how to fit players and get them to perform. He can use him to replicate Pascal's role in Chelsea, and we should expect the English star to produce an impact in the final third.
