Yanga Halts Simba's Early Title Celebrations in Kariakoo Derby

Yanga SC managed to walk away with bragging rights after defeating arch-rivals Simba SC 1-0 in Tanzania's Vidacom Premier League match played at Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar Es Salaam on Saturday.

The lone goal of the entertaining Kariakoo Derby was scored by Zawadi Mauya in the 12th minute.

The victory for Yanga reduced the gap between them and the defending champions Simba to only 3 points. Simba has amassed 73 points while Yanga lies in the second position with 70.

Yanga has played 32 games which are 2 more than their opponents out of the the total 34 in a season. Azam are in the 3rd position with 64 points.

Yanga FC thwarted all efforts by Simba to claim the bragging rights. Yanga missed 6 of their players due to disciplinary actions taken against them.

The loss is a blow to Simba who would have retained the trophy for 4 consecutive seasons. It was also the first league loss for coach Didier Gomez Da Rosa since joining the club in January this year.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan attended the entertaining action. Also in attendance was the Minister of Water Juma Awesa.

Last season, Simba registered one of its best performances in CAF Champions League after going through to the last eight where they narrowly lost to Keizer Chiefs of South Africa.
