Seeking to become the second back-to-back World cup winners after Brazil, reigning champions opened their group D with a stylish defeat of 4-1 against their rivals Australia.
Australia conceded more than three goals for the first time in 40 matches, succumbing to an exceptional second half display by the current world cup champions.
Giroud’s two goals in both halves saw him equal Thierry Henry’s record of 51 goal for the leading goal scorer of the French national team.
It was a massive comback for France who had a poor start that led them to concede to C. Goodwin’s goal after just nine minutes.
But the reigning champions got back to work and A. Rabiot levelled up before Giroud made it 2-1 at half-time.
K. Mbappe, who has been a thorn in the flesh of the Australians, extended France lead with a nice header in the 68th minute before Giroud completed his brace to seal all three points for France , waving for the man of the match day to this game.
