Raphael Varane is perhaps the most talked-about center-back in the whole of Europe right now since his big-money move from Real Madrid to Manchester United this summer. A lot of people think that 50 million euros spent on the 28-year-old was worth it as he has proven himself on the biggest stages, including the Champions League and the World Cup. Here are things you probably did not know about him.
1. He started out playing Rugby.
Although Varane started playing football very early in his life, football was not exactly his first choice. He actually started out playing Rugby, he didn't grow to like it very much so he switched to football as a young boy, and surely the entire world of football is grateful for the decision that young Varane made many years ago.
2. One of the most expensive Centre-backs in 2021.
In the 2021 summer transfer window, Manchester United spend 50 million euros to get his signature with that the French defender makes it into an elite of the 10 most expensive center-backs in the world which is currently topped by his new defensive partner Harry Maguire.
3. Married to a beautiful childhood girlfriend.
Varane not only has a glamorous career but also has a beautiful family and an adorable love story. The world cup winner tied the knot with his beautiful wife Camille they had met many years earlier in secondary school in France. When he made his move to the Spanish capital, she was by his side too. The couple has two beautiful kids a son and a daughter.
4. Manchester United tried to sign him 3 times.
Before a successful attempt in the 2021 summer transfer window, English giants Manchester United had tried two times and failed to get his signature. First in 2011 when sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge but it seems that Zidane's call did the trick as he ended up going to Madrid.
That year United tried to get him again a couple of years later when he was a more established player but failed again. This time Varane admitted that it was difficult to say no to the offer especially because he had a special relationship with Paul Pogba.
