In their season-opening match at Thika Stadium on Sunday, AFC Leopards defeated Tusker 1-0. Musa Saad, a South Sudanese international, scored the first-half goal that separated the two teams. The local giants had to make do with a drastically changed roster when up to 17 players left, and they were unable to acquire any new players due to the Fifa transfer restriction. Tusker, on the other hand, had a team with a lot of experience, as they advanced to the second round of the Caf Champions League.

In the 12th minute, Ingwe were able to put Tusker on the back foot with a swift counter-attack, but Peter Thiong'o's final ball from the left side was off target.
After a few minutes of domination, Leopards took a deserved lead in the 16th minute when Saad scored.
