I Lack 'big words' to Mourn Philip Ochieng' Says Former Nation MD Evans Kidero

Former Nairobi governor Evans Kidero has joined Kenyans in mourning the late veteran Nation columnist Philip Ochieng'.

Kidero, who served as Nation Managing Director for over two years, says he interacted with Philip during his times as the MD, where their friendship solidified. "Phil was funny and defended his diction and 'tough words' in very comical ways," adds Kidero.

In a post on his Facebook page, Kidero narrated how Ochieng reacted after a Sunday Nation reader criticized his column in a letter to the editor, complaining that readers could hardly understand anything he says. His response was even harder and funny.

"A newspaper has many sections... If you find my column beyond your intellectual acuity, just flip the page and read other things, perhaps obituaries. I will not write in pedestrian English merely to satisfy academic liliputians," replied Ochieng.

In conclusion, Kidero mourns his friend as thus "I lack 'big words' to mourn the legend of the Fifth Column, an extraterrestrial wordsmith who was perfectly skilled, virtuous and ethical in his work."
