The kenyan music industry has been doing well on the African arena and even internationally. The industry has however had it own blemishes with artistes trying to pull stunts for publicity. Some go to an extent of getting into scandals to catch the attention of fans while others may paint their competitors in bad light to counter their influence and popularity. One of the celebrated former gospel artiste Ringtone Apoko has over years come out as a master of theatrical stunts. He has perfected the art of pulling stunts as his marketing strategy to promote his music or arousing the interest of kenyans to what he is doing in the industry. A video of him being arrested by kenyan police officers over Easter weekend went viral. In the video that was doing rounds on social media, he is seen on the ground in handcuffs. After a short struggle, he is bundled into a police car boot.
This comes a few days after an internet sensational called Bridget Achieng accused him of rape. Achieng had alleged that the singer raped her 6 years ago. In a statement Achieng said, “I was on the couch waiting for the producer when Ringtone closed the door and grabbed me and pinned me down and that is how the assault happened." Achieng said she had afterwards gone to Westland’s police station to record a statement on what had befallen her in the hands of her assailant. Bridget Achieng added that she was not the only victim of Ringtone's assault but there were six other women she knew that had suffered sexual assault from the artist.
