The Abimbo gold mine tragedy in December 2021 made headlines when 10 miners got trapped underground while at work. The accident left two dead while 8 others were rescued alive. One of the victims who didn't make it out alive was the 29 year old Tom Okwach who remained trapped underground for 7 months.
This left Okwach's mother, Joyce Ocholla, to camp under a tree next to the mine, hoping she will see her son once again. Well after months of camping at the site, the family of Tom Okwach can now breath a sigh of relief after the body of their son retrieved on Sunday, June 26, 2022.
According to the report by the Daily Nation on Twitter indicated the 29-year-old's body was recovered 7 months later because his family claimed that it was due the abandonment by the government. This resulted to Okwach's body to remain underground because the family and the volunteer rescuers had lack of county and national governments' support in helping the rescue or retrieve the miner.
