A 25-year-old Walter Lumumba Saya was on Tuesday morning arrested and arraigned in court hours later over the death of his wife Miriam Ongoche Okutoi. Lumumba who resides in Nairobi’s Muthurwa area and works as a laptop bags seller at Githurai market is reported to have badly beaten up his wife on Monday evening at around 9 pm.
The suspect attacked his wife after suspecting that she was cheating on him with his neighbor. The loud screams by the wife attracted the attention of neighbors who came in and separated the two. They later retired to bed late into the night.
However, at 4 am, Lumumba told the police that he woke up and found his wife dead. He rushed to Muthurwa police station to report the incident.
The Investigating team led by Mowlid Roble who visited the scene documented it and took the body to the mortuary awaiting autopsy.
In court, detectives petitioned the court to detain the suspect for seven days to allow them to record witness statements and conduct a postmortem. Their request was granted by Magistrate Jane Kamau of Milimani Law court.
The matter will be mentioned on February 17. The 20-year-old Miriam Okutoi leaves behind a young daughter yet to celebrate her first birthday.
