NHIF On The Spot After Failing To Explain How Over Sh400 million Police Insurance Cover Was Used

Few years ago, the government mandated the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to provide medical cover to civil servants and members of the disciplined forces, the police and prison officers.

Barely a week ago, Interior Principal Secretary (PS) Karanja Kibicho said that the government has reserved a Ksh. 200 million kitty to cushion police officers who exhaust their annual NHIF cover limits.

However, NHIF is on the spot after it emerged that it cannot account how Sh400 million in excess of loss of insurance cover for police officers was used.

The financial scandal has made the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the National Assembly summon NHIF Chief Executive Officer and Inspector General of Police to explain how the money was used.

In May 2021, A parliamentary committee summoned the management NHIF to explain why it has not refunded Sh200 million in medical cover for the police to the Interior ministry as required by law.

The Public Accounts Committee of the National Assembly asked NHIF Chief Executive Officer to explain why it took is long to have the money refunded.
