Lake Victoria has experienced huge increase in terms of water level since early last year and this has gone to affect many small islands in the area. Islands such as Sukru, Ringiti, takawiri, sena, yokia, Remba and many others in Mfangano, Homa bay has been hugely affected.
The state of houses in the island
Many residents has experienced huge losses of property caused by the water as houses built nearby the lake shores collapsed. The worst affected island in the region is Remba island found past Mfangano island. This island is a small one and has since been divided by two by the increasing water as the water flows from one end to the other through the middle, destroying houses and property.
pathways are filled with water.
The shocking part of it being that many residents in the area has since refused to leave the island even though the population decreased immensely as some decided to migrate from the island. Some people even operate in houses full of water. This is posing a huge danger for the people leaving here and therefore it's high time the government should intervene and forcefully evict them from the island.
people operate in houses filled with water.
While speaking to the Island's BMU chairman Okoth Mamra, he said the island is a huge source of livelihood to the many residents living there as the island is well known for its high production of fish which has since then created many employment to many people. He added that, even if they decide to forcefully drive people from the island, some of the people there doesn't even know where they came from hence it's a challenge to do so.
The island state.
The state of the island is now worrying as you can see in the pictures posted here, there's no roads left uncovered with water forcing the residents to just walk on water. It's remaining to be seen how long this can go before the entire small island is fully covered with water.
