The Kenya Meteorological Department has been working hard to provide accessible meteorological information and climatological services to general public in accordance with the World Meteorological Information WMO. The company has enhanced mitigation of adverse impacts of severe weather weather and extreme climatic conditions to aid an integrative planning framework to the citizens as this has aided in the utilization of natural resources for national and regional developments. The company has been able to do this by the development of an efficient telecommunications system for rapid collection and dissemination of meteorological information.
The director of the Kenya Meteorological Department MS, Stella Aura MBS working in conjunction with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry has released a five day weather forecasting update whose validity ranges from 15th to 19th July 2021. This comes after the month of July has experienced cool and cloudy conditions with heavy rains being experienced in several parts of the country.
According to the forecast, heavy rains are expected in several parts of the country in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, Central and South Rift Valley and the Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi County.
Regional weather forecast valid from 15th to 19th July 2021
1.The Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the South and Central South Rift Valley; [Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia Counties],
Morning rains with afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected over several parts during the forecast period. Night showers are also expected over a few places with maximum temperatures of 28°C and minimum temperatures of 10°C is expected during the forecast period.
2.The Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi County; [Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Muranga, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka and Nairobi Counties],
Cool and cloudy conditions accompanied by light rains are expected in the above areas during the forecast period. Morning rains with a chance of afternoon showers are expected during the forecast period. Night showers are also expected with maximum temperatures of 23°C and minimum temperatures of 8°C are expected in the above areas during the forecast period.
3.South Eastern Lowlands and the Coastal Strip; [Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale Counties],
Morning showers accompanied with sunny intervals are expected during the forecast period. Afternoon showers with partly cloudy conditions at night are also expected during the forecast period.
The information from the Kenya Meteorological Department has been useful in ensuring protection of property, saving lives and in the protection of the environment. The adverse weather conditions being experienced in several parts of the country are likely to cause disruption of transportation and business activities.
