Nakuru has been elevated to the status of Kenya's fourth city!

To Wednesday, President Uhuru bestowed city status on the Nakuru Municipality.

Uhuru signed the citation during the unveiling of the Nakuru flag. Nakuru is the fourth largest city in Kenya, behind Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa.

He was accompanied by Raila Odinga, the leader of the ODM party, and Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka.

The Urban Areas and Cities Act aims to implement Article 184 of the Constitution, which deals with the classification, governance, and management of urban areas and cities.

Before being classified as a city, urban areas must have infrastructure such as roads, street lighting, markets, fire stations, garbage disposal, and capability for crisis management.

They must also have integrated development plans and demonstrate the ability to generate sufficient revenue to sustain operations, according to the Act.
