An non-custodial inmate was allegedly shot dead by a police officer at Majira police station at Maara Sub-County in Tharaka Nithi County.

According to sources, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) commenced investigations after a 20-year-old Brian got shot in the head following an unclear circumstance with the police officer.

The area residents were grieved by the incident and stormed the police station in pursuit of the officer. Nevertheless, they threatened to burn down the police post after the gruesome killing of an 'innocent' youth.

They area residents dispelled claims by the police officer that Brian had attacked him with a machete. They placed hurricanes along Meru-Chogoria road hampering navigation of vehicles. They challenged the base police officers to show them the police officer who had committed the menace.

Police officers used teargas to chase away the area residents. The body of the deceased was transferred to Chuka County Referral Hospital.

Chogoria Member of County Assembly Margaret Gitari was certain that the police officer deliberately killed Brian Munene. She urged the public to calm down and wait for the investigations to take course.

"It's very clear that the intention of the officer was to kill the young man. This is why he shot him in the head," she said.

Chogoria police station commander Boniface Kiilu announced that the matter was in the hands of government crime officials.

"The IPOA and DCI officers arrived at the scene before the body was collected and will definitely investigate and reveal the truth on what exactly happened," he said.
