Kilifi: Family To Bury Banana Trunk In Open Grave Of Wife Whose Body Went Missing In Maburikani

An ancient Mijikenda ritual of burying banana trunk will be performed at the open grave of Fatma Mwero, whose body disappeared on Monday night from the grave at Maburikani village.

We will use a banana trunk in the grave, said the woman's widower Daniel Chiro. Chiro confirmed a priest will hold prayers in his house ahead of the burial ceremony.

Mr Chiro, a former police officer, noted the body of his wife went missing on Monday night from the grave at Maburikani village in Bonje location in Rabai Constituency in Kilifi County.

Rabai sub-county police chief Fred Abuga who confirmed the incident said an inquiry file has been opened and taken to the office of Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers to investigate the matter.

“As at yet the detectives are trying to find out what happened,” Abuga said, noting that, "during the probes, some family members will be required to record give statements with the police."

Yesterday, Chiro indicated that his family had settled on burying a banana trunk in accordance with traditions of the Duruma, one of the nine Mijikenda sub-tribes even though he is a Christian.

“It has been searched everywhere including the bush around and beyond Mabirikani area in Mazera in Rabai but we found nothing,” Chiro added.
