On Monday, January 9, 2023, four errant police officers were apprehended while attempting to rob two men who had just withdrawn Ksh2 million from the bank. They were doing so in broad daylight in Nairobi CBD Police.
A police report seen by K24 Digital says that four rogue officers targeted Hassan Omar, an employee of Afro Forex Bureau, and Mohammed Hassan, who had traveled to Absa Bank along Mama Ngina Street and withdrew Ksh2 million in coins around 11 a. m. on Monday.
Omar and Hassan were confronted by four men along Standard Street, approximately 20 meters from the Afro Forex bureau. The men claimed to be police officers and informed Omar and Hassan that they were after Mohammed Hassan, who was carrying the cash in a bag.
The two men were informed by the four officers that Hassan was wanted for a crime that they had not told them about.
Hassan Omar issued an alarm, which drew the attention of guards and officers from the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) who had been protecting Dahabshil the Forex market Bureau nearby.
They got there quickly, and the manager and one of the security guards from Afro the Forex market Bureau immediately took the cash bag to the forex bureau for safe custody.
The four dishonest officials then detained Hassan Omar and Mohammed Hassan while driving a white Toyota Premio with the registration KBZ 036B.
The four claimed to be transporting the two to DCI headquarters. The foreign exchange bureau' s owners later reported the issue to the police, who then intercepted the vehicle and its occupants in Muthaiga.
The four dishonest police officers had been identified as S/no. 49743 Sgt. Daniel Wambua is the C/O of DCI Kasarani, S/no. 76984 Pc. Stanley Mohammed Gitonga is the S/no. 240656 Cpl. Eliud Bor is a protection officer SGB who works at the Kenyan union office in Gigiri.
Later, it was discovered that Sgt. Nicholas Murira, who worked at Mugutha police station in Juja sub- county, was with the three at the scene but wasn' t in the car at the time of the arrest.
The rogue officials were escorted to Nairobi' s DCI offices for questioning after the arrest, and they were then taken to Sub- County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO) Central for the same police action.
A Jericho pistol with serial number 40305526 and 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition was recovered from Sgt. Wambua, and a Gillboa pistol with serial number kn- 0387 and 14 rounds of 9mm ammunition was recovered from PC Gitonga after looking at the rogue officers.
Sgt. Wambua was seen with a pocket phone from Huawei with the model number 173103001 and the IMEI 864106020058871.
All of the dishonest police officers were taken into custody on suspicion of attempted theft with violence. The vehicle they were driving is being held at the regional police headquarters in Nairobi.
