Sad Morning as a Woman and her infant in Kakamega County Lose their lives because of Ksh 1000.
A mother and a child have lost their dear lives at Lumakanda hospital in Lugari Kakamega county in the hands of inhuman health workers. The two were denied hospital attention because they were unable to pay ksh 1000 advance medical fee demanded by the hospital. The husband to the deceased had to rush home in search of the money but on return, his wife and child had already died.
"My wife delivered on Thursday but she has been going through some complications together with the infant. The situation got out of hand today morning and in hurry,I rushed them here at around 6am.However,they were not attended to since I had no cash that time.I told them that I had left some money in the house since I was in hurry but they never listened. So I rushed home and when I came back, received a heartbreaking news that my family was no more,"he said.
Such cases have been rampant in the country where hospitals have prioritised money other than services leaving many patients losing their lives.Bumula Constituency Member of Parliament Hon Mwambu Mabonga proposed an ammendment bill in the Parliament to make some adjustments on Health Bill. The Bill proposes that it shall be offensive for persons in charge of public health to demand advance fee payment during emergencies in hospitals. If this bill is passed,it shall be a crime for hospital to demand advance payment before treatment, detain discharged patients or corpse due to unpaid medical bill.
The family is now appealing county leaders to come in and ensure they get justice.
