Mining, Blue Economy & Maritime affairs Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has banned all activities including swimming along the beaches of the Indian Ocean past 5 pm.

This comes after two people drowned on Christmas Day at the Jomo Kenyatta public beach in Mombasa county.

On Christmas Day, two people lost their lives while others sustained life-threatening injuries after the boat they were riding capsized into the Indian Ocean.

It was reported that a family from Nairobi had had a boat for them to enjoy the ride in the ocean, however, while in the middle of the ocean waters, the boat was reportedly hit by a suspected high-velocity wave before capsized.

A man and woman perished while the third person was rushed to the intensive care unit at a Mombasa hospital.

Two infants who were also in the boat are in stable condition.

The government has banned beach activities past 5 pm so that such unfortunate incidents do not happen again.

During this festive time, many tourists stay at the beach past 5 pm.
