A pregnant 42-year-old lady drowned at a well in Mwonge, Meru South Sub-County, Tharaka-Nithi County.

According to Tharaka-Nithi County Emergency Department Manager Alex Mugambi, Kawira fell into the open well while gathering water on Friday.

He stated that after getting the information, county emergency authorities raced to remove the body and transport it to the Chuka County Referral Hospital morgue.

"We were able to recover the corpse and transport it to the Chuka County Referral Hospital morgue," Mr Mugambi added.

He said that, despite the borehole's depth, there is ample oxygen within and that the mother of two may have died from suffocation.

"The well is roughly five feet deep and the woman must have drowned," he explained. Mr Mugambi warned those who use such boreholes to exercise caution, especially during wet seasons when many areas are slick.

Ms Grace Wanjiru; the deceased's sister-in-law said they sensed something was amiss when the woman took her time at the well and when they went to check, they discovered she had fallen in.

Ms Wanjiru stated that, despite having piped water, they utilize the well since the taps are constantly dry. Ms Lucy Kanana, a local stated that this is not the first such incidence in the region.
