Police In Malaba Allegedly Shoot And Kill Man For Not Wearing Mask

Residents of Malaba have reacted angrily to an incident last night where police shot a man who resisted arrest for not wearing a mask.

The incident drew the ire of the public as the police used excessive force on a man who some claim was actually drunk. Recently the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai had a difficult time shielding questions on the use of unwarranted force by the police to implement the rule for everyone to wear a mask in public.

Officers in Nairobi's CBD have turned the lack of wearing a mask or putting it on inappropriately into a cash cow as they administer instant fines which they pocket.

An incident in Lessos Market in Nandi County where police shot a physically handicapped cobbler for not wearing a mask degenerated into violent public reaction where 3 more people lost their lives and a police post was razed to the ground.

Riots in Lessos, Nandi County.

Indiscriminate fines and heavy handedness by police officers ostensibly implementing Covid-19 containment protocols has been an issue of constant contestation between the administration and the public.
