Differences Between GSU And AP Police And Who Is Supposed To Guard DP According To The Constitution

These are the main differences between General Service Unit (GSU) and Administration Police (AP) which are both Police Service Unit in Kenya.

GSU is a wing in the Kenya Police Service consisting of highly trained police officers. AP is wing in the Kenya Police Service, Security Organization which is a branch of Republic of Kenya's National Police Service.

From 2018, APs officers no longer perform general police duties, they were divided into several units. Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU), Border Police Unit (BPU), Anti-Stock-Theft Unit, Security of Government Buildings Unit and Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU).

Functions of the AP as per the constitution of Kenya, are maintaining law and order, preserve peace, protect life and property, protection of government property, performing any other duties as assigned and directed by the inspector general.

Functions of GSU police unit according to the constitution are providing security to his Excellency President, Deputy President and any other top leader in the country, state houses and lodges. Provide security to foreign airlines. Controlling rioters and countering terrorism activities and emergencies.

According to the constitution, GSU are highly trained to provide security to top leaders in the country like President and Deputy President. AP are not trained for this tasks.
