Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu arrived at River Enziu site where rescue operations are ongoing.Reports indicate 24 people have been confirmed dead after bus plunged into the river.
Some of the passengers could be seen screaming and raising their hands through the windows as the bus sank gradually.
In her official Facebook page account Governor Charity Ngilu said:
This afternoon tragedy has struck Kitui County. A bus carrying Catholic faithfuls was swept away while attempting to cross a swollen river Enziu in Nguni, Mwingi.
Rescue efforts are ongoing. So far there are 17 survivors and regrettably 21 bodies have been recovered.
We are at the scene of the accident together with Kenya Redcross personnel and law enforcement agencies doing everything possible to search and rescue as well as recovery.We pray for God’s strength and compassion to comfort the affected families and friends.
Also Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua send his rescue team to aid. He said:
I send my deepest condolences to the family, friends of those who have perished in the Mwingi bus accident. I also send my condolences to my fellow governor, mama Ngilu, during this tough time.
I have dispatched my Machakos rescue team to assist in the rescue efforts. I urge all drivers to exercise caution and be patient on the road especially during this rainy season.
