Survivor in Mwingi Bus Tragedy Narrates Losing 11 Relatives to the Fateful Accident

Out of at least 33 people that have already been confirmed dead after a bus plunged in River Enziu in Mwingi, Kitui County, one of the survivors has revealed losing 11 family members to the accident.

Mr. Rodgers Muli tearfully recalled how his relatives had boarded the bus hoping to join in celebrating their parents (Mutua Mbuvi and Syombua Mbuvi,) wedding, before their joy was suddenly turned into grief and sorrow.

He (Rodgers) was among the passengers in the overloaded school bus that plunged into Enziu River on Saturday, December 4. "The majority of the people who perished are from my family. My aunts, uncles. We were waiting for a body of a child to be retrieved and he has been recovered," grief-stricken Muli narrated.

According to Muli, his aged parents are yet to come to terms with the fate that saw their wedding suspended. Bereavede families are now pleading with the government to step in soon and construct a permanent bring to avert further losses.

By Sunday (yesterday) evening, 33 corpses had since been recovered, while the ill-fted bus was successfully retrieved from the water masses.

Kitui Governor Charity Kaluki Ngilu added that efforts were still ongoing to see if there could be other bodies trapped inside the bus, or on the river bed.

Another survivor confessed how the driver was reluctant to cross the river, a decision that took them two hours of waiting before diving into the flooded river.

The survivor noted how the bus driver gathered some courage after two matatus and another vehicle braved through the waters. He also stated how they were 40 passengers when they left Mwingi, but while crossing, the 51-seater had carried more than its capacity, since others hopped onto the bus at the river bank hoping to cross over.
