Jacob Onyango, a survivor of the Abimbo gold mine tragedy narrates how he survived the horrible ordeal.

Were you injured somewhere?

No i never sustained any injuries while trapped inside the rubble, and i want to thank God am here again talking to my friends and family members.

Jacob, were you able to get sufficient oxygen while trapped inside the collapsed goldmine?

Ummm, yes I was able to breath sufficiently through the long pipe provided for breathing.

And Jacob, were trapped alone or there some colleagues around you?

Well, we were three gentlemen trapped in one place and we kept talking to ourselves inside, hoeever, it was so dark.

How did you manage to talk to the people outside?

Well like I said before, we communicated with the rescuers above through the pipe.

Jacob do you wish to go on working as an artisanal. miner again?

No, no, no I will find something to do apart from this job. What i saw while trapped inside for six days, i will never forget.

What lesson will tell your colleagues or friends who are still doing this kind of job?

According to what I went through, I can urge them to find something else to do. Me talking to you here is a miracle from God. You can imagine how staying inside a collapsed mine without lighta and food for six days.

Jacob is one of the eight artisan miners who were on Thursday trapped in the gold mine in Abimbo Village.

The trapped miners are reported to have been part of a group of 10 who were on their daily mining expedition at the mine when it caved in some minutes to 1pm.
