24 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) across the county today received free wheelchairs courtesy of the Department of Gender, Youth, Culture, Sports and Social Services in partnership with Bethanykids organization.
This is a culmination of the first phase distribution exercise that kicked off on Monday this week going all the way to the five sub-counties in Vihiga County.
While addressing the beneficiaries at Itando Rehabilitation Centre in Lyaduywa/Izava ward, Vihiga Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo stated that his government aims at providing an ample environment to PWDs by not only providing them with supportive equipment but also empowering them economically.
'This is not the end. We have only distributed 106 wheelchairs out of the more than 700 registered PWDs and I want to assure you that in the second phase we shall also give focus to other disabilities such as the blind and deaf,' Said the Governor.
Dr Ottichilo also iterated that Vihiga is among the first three counties to enact a Disability Act that has made it easy to partner with donors.
On her part, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Gender Felistas Barasa averred that the exercise is part of the implementation of the Disability Act that advocates for the formation of a Disability Board that will cater for the interests of PWDs, a process she said was in the pipeline.
According to Chief Officer Gender Philip Gavuna, today's event was specifically dedicated to those who missed out during distribution at the Sub Counties level, adding that the remaining wheelchairs have been assigned to the Governor's Office, Huduma Centre, County Assembly among other public areas to enable PWDs access services effectively and efficiently.
Rev. David Kevogo, a beneficiary from Izava Lyaduywa could not hide his appreciation to the County Government of Vihiga, noting that indeed he has been spending a lot financially in terms of movement while discharging his duties but going forward mobility has now been eased.
