Mother to the deceased, Joseph Mutwiri was very worried about the whereabouts of his son as he had gone for several hours without coming back home.
According to the area assistant chief, Mrs Evangeline, Joseph had gone to the river without alerting his family only for his mother to stumble on his clothes and phone by the river side.
The assistant chief explained that the distressed mother waited for her son by the river bank, but he never came out which prompted her to raise an alarm. The Red Cross team arrived and retrieved the body from the river.
"The deceased, Joseph Mutwiri went for a swim and I believe he didn’t know the depth of the water. When the mother realized he’d taken long to return he went to in search of him." The assistant chief told reporters.
"When she found her son’s phone, shoes and clothes placed beside the water, she raised an alarm. Members of the community responded and searched for him and could not locate him. But the Red Cross team combed the river and retrieved the body." Evangeline concluded.
It is believed that this is not the first case of drowning in the river, as some three more people have died in there with the local elders urging people to stay away from the killer river.
Rest in peace.
