Mary Wanjira, a prisoner at Lang'ata women's prison has confessed that she was jailed after stealing a car.
Mary lived in Dandora and operated in a gang of 4 friends. They would pretend to board a taxi then attack the driver or drug him after some minutes. After that they would throw the driver out and get away with the car.
On one fateful day, they stole a car which had a tracker. The police managed to catch up with them and they all ended up being jailed.
All her friends were able to pay their way out and she's the only one left serving a life sentence.
Mary says that at the time when she was jailed, her son was 8 years old and now he is in form 2. Every time she talks to him on phone, she tells him she was jailed while hustling for him. She usually advises him to avoid breaking the law and work hard in school to avoid ending up in jail like her.
