Prepare For Heavy Rains & Weather Changes In The Next Six Days If You Live In The Specified Counties


The month of January has seen changes in weather patterns as cold and cloudy conditions with heavy rains have been experienced in several parts of the country. The Kenya Meteorological Department has been determined to provide accessible meteorological and climatological changes in timely warnings and updates on the changing weather patterns in accordance with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).


The meteorological department has succeeded in the provision of weather forecasting updates through the provision of an effective telecommunications system for rapid collection and dissemination of meteorological information to the general public. This has facilitated the infusion of scientific knowledge to the people hence enhancing the utilization of public resources for national development.

The Kenya Meteorological Department working in conjunction with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry has provided weather forecasting updates whose validity ranges from 18th to 24th January 2022. According to the forecast, rainfall is expected over several parts of the country throughout the forecast period. Isolated storms are also expected in those areas likely to receive more than 50mm of rainfall within one week.

Detailed regional forecast for the next six days


1.The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Central and South Rift Valley; (Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, West Pokot, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Busia, Migori, Baringo, Nakuru and Laikipia Counties),

There is a chance of occasional morning rains being experienced over several areas during the forecast period. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are also expected over several places with a chance of night showers being experienced over these areas during the forecast period.


2.The Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi County;( Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Muranga, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi Counties),

Mornings are likely to be cloudy with a chance of afternoon showers expected over several places during the forecast period. The maximum temperatures are likely to range from 23 to 31 while minimum temperatures ranging from 05 and 16 are expected.

3.The South Eastern lowlands; (Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita Taveta counties),

Morning rains and afternoon showers are expected over several places during the forecast period. There is also a chance of night showers over several places during the forecast period.


The changing weather patterns are likely to have an influence in the disruption of transportation and businesses activities. The updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department have helped in the saving of lives, protection of property and in the conservation of the natural environment.
