Twenty three people were confirmed dead after a bus ferrying choir members plunged into River Enziu in Kitui County.
Fourteen of the passangers were rescued.The bus had atleast 30 people on board when the accident occurred at 11 am in Ngune village in Mwingi Central.
The victims were choir members of Mwingi Catholic Church and we're traveling to Nunu area from Mwingi town.The police confirmed that they were heading to a wedding of one of their members when the accident happened.
The bus driver tried to steer the vehicle past a flooded bridge but the water tides were too strong as a result,the bus was swept into the river.According to the survivors and witnesses,the bus driver insisted on crossing the river despite being warned by some of the passangers.
When the bus was sinking,some of the passangers could be seen screaming and raising their hands through the windows as the bus sank.
