Nairobi county has threatened to discard unclaimed 146 bodies from city morgue.

On an advert in the Daily Nation news paper the Nairobi county government under the Nairobi metropolitan service has publicly warned to discard about 164 bodies at the city mortuary.

The county has urged Kenyans to identify the unclaimed bodies at City Mortuary within 7 days, failure to which Nairobi Metropolitan Services will seek authority for disposal.

This move was made to help decongest the city morgue which is mostly used by the public. The morgue has a capacity of 167 bodies at a time and this massive backlog would hinder it's operations.

Cap 242 of the Public Health Act provides that an unclaimed body should be removed from a mortuary within two weeks or else it is disposed of in a mass grave after public officers obtain a court’s permission.

The morgue which was established in 1957 is a big warner to the county as it receives more than 3.5 million shillings in a month as payments from family members of the deceased.
