The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) on Tuesday night impounded contraband gold and jewellery worth Ksh 31 Million from 15 women who smuggling it through the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Reports indicate that the 15 women who were leaving the country for India through Doha, Qatar were busted with 4.88 kilo grams of smuggled gold at JKIA by the Agency's customs officers.

According to KRA Commissioner Customs and Border Control, Ms Lilian Nyawanda, the 15 were part of a group of 30 women headed to the same destination adding that they are directly associated with three other female travellers who earlier on August 19, 2021 allegedly entered Mumbai with approximately 1kg of gold concealed internally.

She revealed that the customs officers together with a multi-agency team discovered the undeclared gold and jewellery during a body search just before the women boarded their flight. She adds that they were asked to cancel the flight to allow for further investigations as the intercepted gold and jewellery have been deposited in the Customs warehouse.
