A one and half year old child died after their kitchen caught fire in Kalakalya village, Makindu sub-county of Makueni county today.
The baby was with two other children aged three and five years in the kitchen at the time of the accident.
Makueni county police commander confirmed the incident noting that the mother of the kids had left them and went to the market to buy vegetables.
On coming back she was met by screams and cries by residents only to see her kitchen on fire.
Neighbours were able to save the other two kids but the little one didn't make it as she had been burnt to death.
The cause of the fire has not been established.
Police arrived at the scene and took the body of the toddler to Makindu sub county hospital mortuary for preservation.
